The Website will also provide you with various links to the Parish Councils Minutes, Councillors and Clerk. Other useful links are also included. The Parish of Hoo St Werburgh is undoubtedly one of the larger Parishes on the Hoo Peninsula in land mass and population with approximately 3000 properties and an electorate of 5657 at the last count (May 2007). These figures are sure to grow by up to 20% for the reason of the anticipated housing provision. Although Hoo is described as a large rural settlement sitting within the confines of the ‘Thames Gateway', the future can only be described as positively challenging but hopeful.

Much of the Parish sits on a south sloping ridge of the Peninsula commanding extensive views across the River Medway. To the north there is a municipal golf course amidst open farmland stretching to the high ridge of our neighbouring Parish of High Halstow. To the west we have vast stretches of open farmland to the adjoining village of St Mary Hoo. To the east there is the Hamlet of Chattenden incorporating Hoo Common, (part of Hoo Parish) and the ‘Upnors', Upper and Lower, both of which border the urban sprawl of the Medway Towns. Many miles of public rights of way criss-cross this Parish with one in particular being quite ancient. The ‘Saxon Shore Way' a long distance footpath, part of which follows the line of this ancient track edges beside the River Medway where there are views across to St Mary's Island passing Hoo Marina Park and the many yacht moorings on its way. The region to the north of the A228 at Chattenden, once home to MOD - 17 TH Squadron also has many paths that venture through areas of beautiful primrose strewn woodland. This vast land expanse was reputedly the remains of ancient woodland that totally engulfed this area many centuries ago. It is wished that this précis of the Parish of Hoo St Werburgh has given you an insight into this historic area. |
